Oral Pathology

Early Detection for Your Peace of Mind

The inside of the mouth is normally lined with a special type of skin (mucosa) that is smooth and coral pink. Any change in this appearance could be a warning sign of a pathological process. While the majority of oral changes are benign (non-cancerous), early evaluation by a specialist is the most effective way to ensure a healthy outcome.

At The Periodontal Implant Institute, our board-certified specialists are trained to identify, diagnose, and treat various disorders of the mouth, including oral cancer.

When to Seek an Evaluation

You should perform a monthly oral self-examination. If you notice any of the following changes that do not resolve within 10 to 14 days, please contact our McLean office for a professional assessment:

Color Changes

Any new red or white patches on your gums, tongue, or cheeks.

Sores That Won't Heal

A mouth sore or ulcer that lingers or bleeds easily.

Lumps or Texture

Any new bumps, thick spots, or "crusty" areas on your lips or gums.

Throat or Jaw Issues

A persistent sore throat, hoarse voice, or sudden difficulty chewing and swallowing.

Persistent Numbness

Any unexplained pain or a "pins and needles" feeling in your mouth or lips.

Our Diagnostic Process

We use advanced tools to give you a fast, accurate diagnosis so you can move forward with a clear plan.

1. Clinical Exam

Dr. Waleed or Dr. Carpio will carefully inspect your mouth, gums, and tongue, along with a quick check of your neck and jaw.

2. Simple Biopsy

If we find a suspicious area, we’ll take a tiny sample for a specialist to review. This is a quick, minimally invasive process done under local anesthesia—though IV Sedation is always an option for your comfort.

3. Team Care

If treatment is needed, we’ll coordinate directly with your physician and other specialists to manage your health together.

Don’t Wait. Get Evaluated.
